If a silent rupture occures in a Mentor Cohesive Gel Implant can this new type of silicone travel through the body? I can not afford to get MRIs, so if I go with silicone I would only replace the implant if my surgeon, thought there was a problem. Advice please. I have had 2 consolutations and one doctor said no the new kind of silicone can not travel to your lymphnodes and other parts of your body and the other said yes it can????? Thank you!
Answer: Breast Augmentation Hi Pectus Girl,No, the cohesive gel does not migrate, unless you hit your steering wheel at 90 mph without a seat belt. Maybe you can see the video of where they cut the implant in half and the gel just sucks right back into the implant after they squeeze it. MRI's are super inaccurrate. I know this is confusing. Sorry. Be sure to see only a board certified plastic surgeon (by ABPS - The American Board of Plastic Surgery) who is a member of ASAPS (The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) and or a member of ASPS (The American Society of Plastic Surgeons). Also, ask if they have an established, high volume breast augmentation practice, performing several hundred breast augmentations each year. Be sure the PS has been in practice for a while, 20-years or more might be a good gauge.Does the PS offer all three incisions?Discuss the implant type (gel or saline), shaped "gummy bear" or non-shaped, smooth or textured, implant pocket (over or under the muscle) and the "quick recovery approach."Ask to see their before and after photos if you didn’t see any on their website. If they are experienced, they should have several 100 breast implant patients for you to view. I would also recommend that your doctor offer you the chance to talk to past patients who would be happy to discuss their experience with you. You need to feel comfortable, so make sure the environment is safe as in an accredited surgery center. Also, ask a prospective surgeon if he or she has ever published journal articles in professional peer-reviewed journals, which they can provide you.All the best, “Dr. Joe”

Answer: Can silicone travel? Hello pectusgirl. Thanks for your question. It is possible for some silicone to travel to the lymph nodes if the breast sits ruptured in your pocket for many many years. The likelihood of that happening is small with most silicone breast implant devices. The MemoryShape breast implants in an FDA study had a 6.4% rupture rate at 10 years. You can see before and after photos of these breast implants on my website. If you cannot get comfortable with silicone then choose saline, but be sure you understand that saline breast implants are not perfect either. Best wishes, Dr. ALDO.

Answer: Cohesive gel rupture Cohesive gel implants are just that, more cohesive than the liquid silicone of decades past. Even so, if an implant ruptured, theoretically, over time, silicone could migrate to lymph nodes. However, this occurs much less with the cohesive gel implants and any microscopic silicone in the lymph nodes is not significant. Your lymph nodes clear materials from your body all the time and this is their function.

Answer: If a silent rupture occurs. Facts are all implants will eventually leak, even the highly cohesive ones. Also we expect most ruptures will be silent, in that there will be no feeling when a leak happens. Over time however the leaks will cause tenderness in the breast, calcification of the capsule, and capsular contracture. We don't have any evidence that silicone travels through your body, and there are no illnesses caused by breast implants. In short, gel is safe, though unfortunately they will not last forever.
