What kind of t-shirt should I be wearing right after breast augmentation surgery?

Good question. We always recommend our patients to bring some comfy clothes preferably button up shirts, it's easier to put on after surgery. The size does not matter. 

Thank you for your question. Your surgeon will likely bring a surgical bra for you to wear after surgery. It doesn't matter what size t-shirt you wear, or what material it is made of. Just wear something comfortable. 

If you are unsure what kind of shirt to wear I would reach out to your surgeon and ask. Most have different instructions. If they have not given you specific instructions already on what to wear, I would suggest wearing something that breathable, such as cotton, comfortable, and not too tight and button up. You should ask your surgeon what his preference is. I prefer that patients wear a buttoned shirt so that they can put it on easily. Pulling something over your head may be difficult.

The question of what type of bra to wear post-operatively has many different answers depending on what the operating plastic surgeon thinks, as well as which plane the implant is in, either on top of or under the muscle. For my patients, most implants are placed in what's called the dual plane, meaning partially under the muscle and partially under the lining of a muscle. This makes the implant in a dynamic pocket that is acted on not only by gravity, but by the tension of muscle forces which can change over time. On the other side, an implant placed on top of the muscle, is only acted upon by the tension of the overlying skin and breast gland. Therefore, for patients with implants placed under the muscle, it would be my opinion that no underwire or formfitting bra should be worn for the first six weeks until the breast capsule has time to mature. Most implants placed under the muscle, especially smooth walled implants, with the early tension of the muscle, will migrate upward towards the underarm and clavicle. Some physicians will recommend an axillary type band to help force the implant downward. For my patients, I simply tell them to wear either a sports type bra, no bra, or Cami-type top. I don't believe that the result of the breast augmentation can be influenced too much by the type of bra that one wears. I know there are lots of post operative surgical garments, that some physicians feel are helpful, I just don't. Your plastic surgeon will be your best resource for answering this question.
