Smart lipo and all other types of lipo require the injection of fluid into the treatment site in the performance of the procedure and they stimulate your body to produce fluid during the healing process. Compression keeps you from swelling and collecting abnormal amounts of fluid which distort the areas and increase the risk for infection.
If you are talking about the weeks right after your surgery, compression garments do help by reducing swelling and bruising. They also help to recontour the treated area for a more pleasing result. If it has been several months after your surgery, then compression garments will no longer have a beneficial effect.

I'm guessing that just about everyone is going to ask you to wear some type of compression device after the surgery. I certainly would. Unless you wear very formal type clothes the garments can usually be hidden under your regular clothes. Good luck with the procedure.
