How important are follow-ups after rhinoplasty?

Question

I had rhinoplasty in May 2018. I traveled out of state to see a physician & flew home after the procedure. Since then, I've contacted the office thru email 4 times in total. My eyes were blurry for weeks, asked if a nasal spray would be safe, & about a skin issue. My local Drs emphasize I need to get the surgeon's permission first. So I asked for a followup later this year, & he responds with an enthusiastic remark like, "If you want. There is nothing to do. Wait 18 months. Tip is swollen."

I like to see my patient is that one week, two weeks, six weeks, three months, six months, and one year. This is important in case we have to use further splinting, steroid injections, or micro needling. Of course, this can be difficult for my out-of-town patients. If the patients are not able to come in at those intervals, I like to follow up with them through FaceTime or Skype.

I think that follow up after rhinoplasty is very important and I strongly encourage patients to be sure to keep their follow up appointments so we can look to see if there is anything going on that is not appropriate. For out of town patients, we usually have the follow up occur at one month in person and then via video conference call after that.

Hi there and thank you for your question. 
It can be difficult to communicate with a very busy doctor's practice, but trying to be seen by your surgeon and coming prepared (i.e. bring all the questions you have) should be a priority in the period after rhinoplasty. 
If patients have to travel long distances, arranging a video conference is another alternative, especially if you have questions that your surgeon can help you with.

Hello Wispie,Follow up after any surgery is very important.  This includes rhinoplasty.  It is important to monitor the healing process and contractual forces of the scarring to make sure it is all healing as well as it can. I hope this helps and good luck.
