Can I get a breast reduction while being on blood thinners after being treated for a DVT?

Last December I found out I had a DVT in my left leg (which came back twice), due to the fact that I was apparently born without my inferior vena cava. I'm now on the blood thinner Xeralto to treat it, probably for life. My question is, is plastic surgery even a possibility for me? I'm currently a 36DD but I constantly have serious back pain and my breasts pretty much just don't flatter my figure. I really want a breast reduction but I don't know if I can due to my DVT history.

Thank you for your question.  It sounds like you are really suffering from the pain associated with your large breasts and would really benefit from a breast reduction.  For the surgery portion itself, you would need to be off of the blood thinners, and for a time after surgery as well.  How safe and reasonable that would be would need to be discussed with your hematologist or primary care physician.  Your plastic surgeon would likely need medical clearance from your primary care physician and hematologist prior to surgery.  Your safety is the number one priority.  All the best.

In my own practice with the approval of your hematologist I would stop the blood thinner shortly before the operation, resuming it a few days afterwards.

Breast reduction is possible with coordination of your medication with your primary care physician or the one who manages your blood thinner. Your surgeon will help you with medical clearance and coordination of care through your breast reduction procedure.

You need to ask your physician who is handling your blood thinner treatment this question. You should not have elective surgery on the blood thinner but can do it on a minor thinner like lovenox if your physician feels that is safe.
