I have horrible scars under both my arms (in my armpit) as a result of cysts and would they be possible to remove?

Question

When I was 15 I started getting huge boils some got as big as a grape. Earlier this year the doctor had to lance one under my left armpit (again). Both arms have healed but the scar tissue is so painful and has gotten to the point where it hurts to put my arms down in their natural positions. The scars are also tender to touch and constantly break open and get infected again. Would it be recommended that I have the scars removed and if so would it be beneficial?

It sounds as though you have Hidradenitis. Undergo an exam for any lymph nodes. i would use Plato's Scar Serum and Kenalog IIT on the scars. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian#Realself100 Surgeon

Thanks for your question.  I'm sorry to hear about your troubles.  I think it is important that you diagnose and treat the underlying problem.  From you description, it sounds like it could be Hidrandinitis Suppuritiva.  Do a little research and talk with your local doctor about it.  I would get whatever it is under control before we try to fix any scarring.  Best of luck.

I am sorry you have to suffer with this condition. It sounds like you have hidraadenitis, which causes inflammation in the hair follicles and severe scarring and contractions due to pain of moving the arms in full range of motion.
During my Plastic Surgery Fellowship we would treat severe cases of hidraadenitis by removing the full thickness skin including hair follicles, and allowing the open area to heal by secondary intention.
Silvadene 2-4x daily may also help.
