Blocked nose 4 months after rhinoplasty, is this normal?

Hello. Its been 4 months since I've had an open rhinoplasty. I had a nasal bump reduction. Since my surgery i am having nose congestion all the time. My congestions are worse when the weather is cold, my nose seems to feel less blocked on a warmer weather. I never had breathing problems before, now people ask me all the time if i got a cold because of my blocked nose. Is it normal to feel like this every day for 4 months after rhinoplasty?

I am sorry to hear you are not breathing as well after surgery compare to before.  You should ask your surgeon to evaluate the nose for any potential obstructions that can be addressed either surgically or non-surgically.

Since your breathing fluctuates with the weather, at least part of your obstruction may be from your turbinates. Turbinates are internal nasal organs that function to filter and humidify the air you breathe. Turbinates change in size depending on the environment you're in, so if your breathing is improved in warm climates, this may mean your turbinates shrink when it's warm. You should discuss your concerns about postoperative obstruction with your surgeon. Many cases of nasal obstruction after rhinoplasty may be improved without a return to the operating room. I'm sorry to read that you're experiencing discomfort after your rhinoplasty. I recommend seeing your surgeon for a full evaluation of your symptoms. It's possible that the weather-related congestion you're experiencing can be resolved without a revisionary procedure. I hope you're breathing easier soon!

Thank you for the question and sorry this has happened. Unfortunately after rhinoplasty the functional aspects of the nose can be altered like a deviated septum or something called nasal valve collapse. You also could just be experiencing allergies which can get worse after nasal surgery. The first step is to have an evaluation of the inside of your nose. Good luck!

It is unusual to feel and soulnd bloked four months after four months. YOu may have a correctable issue with physical blockage. An exam is warranted. I would think you would go back to your surgeon and have him/her address this issue.All the best,Talmage Raine MD
