Turned away by surgeons because of severe curvature in nose - advice? (photos)

Hi @doreenashay12! Thank you for sending your photos-- you have an extremely deviated nose. Often times, surgeons will turn these away due to the level of complexity needed to ensure straightness. However, I believe this is achievable. I recommend seeing an expert rhinoplasty specialist for in person examination. There are several options for you that can be determined after examination. A rhinoplasty in my opinion is one of the most difficult procedures to perform. In my practice, I utilize piezosurgery. Piezosurgery is a more gentle technique that allows for greater precision. Less bruising and swelling is common with Piezosurgery. In a typical rhinoplasty, a hammer and chisel technique is performed leading to more inadvertent fractures. Best of Luck, Dr. Nima!

Yes, your nose is deviated, as you see. Unless there is something really alarming or really unusual on your intranasal examination, based on your photographs and description there is no clear reason to not do a rhinoplasty. You nose will be straighter with a properly executed rhinoplasty. When there has been a severe deviation for a long time, it is important to know that sometimes the nose does not end up perfectly straight, but still significantly improved from your preoperative state.

This is a standard problem frequently seen in post-traumatic deformities of the nose. A surgeon experienced in rhinoplasty should be able to appropriately counsel you on potential treatment options. A rhinoplasty should be able to improve the deviation, but nothing is absolute in plastic surgery. The goal would be to best straighten the nose and provide a better ability to breathe. I don't know why a surgeon who performs rhinoplasty would turn you away. Of course there are always risks to any procedure and in anyone, but your nose would clearly benefit from a rhinoplasty and septoplasty.

I’m surprised you have been turned down for surgery by several surgeons., you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty but the crookedness will probably only be partially improved. The surgeons you have seen may not be rhinoplasty specialists which is why they chickened out

Thank you for your question. You are an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty. I think rhinoplasty is one of the most beautifying surgeries that we do as plastic surgeons. A large portion of my practice is dedicated to rhinoplasty surgery. It is important to only see plastic surgeons with extensive experience in rhinoplasty, ie perform at least 6 per month and have performed hundreds of cases. Also, critically evaluate on-line galleries to see if their art form resonates with yours. Rhinoplasty is definitely a grey haired plastic surgeon's sport. Best wishes to you.

Hi there! You definitely can get results from a rhinoplasty for a severely-deviated nose. Some surgeons will turn these away due to the level of difficulty needed to ensure straightening. It is challenging, but not impossible. The nasal bones would need to be shifted and grafts placed to hold the nose in a new, midline position. The forces will want to pull the nose back to the injured side if not done well. If you have breathing trouble, the septum would be addressed at the same time. Seek consultation with a facial plastic surgeon who performs high-level rhinoplasty. Hope this helps!

Twisted noses (like the problem you have) are challenging operations but there are options and you have to understand a realistic outcome for you. Since you've had this problem for many years, your bone and cartilage have memory. The key word for you is improvement. Getting a perfectly straight nose will be very challenging. Can your crooked nose be improved? While it is difficult to make a full assessment based only on a few photographs, your nose seems to be only mild to moderately deviated. I and many other surgeons have done noses that were far more crooked than yours who had significant improvement with a combination of rhinoplasty and septoplasty you should see someone who specializes in rhinoplasty and does exclusively nasal surgery. For such a surgeon your nose will probably not present a prohibitive challenge at all. Meanwhile you should not feel so self-conscious about it, there are noses that are far worse and you really look fine.
