Is the area infected after stitches were removed? (Photo)

Question

I had an alar base revision on my left nostril 3 weeks ago. I had the stitches taken out 2 weeks ago. The area started swelling a bit and turn red yesterday. When I pressed it, I could feel it was a little bit inflamed. This morning, I noticed there was a small pus bubble. I popped it and excess bloody fluid came out. It doesn't hurt when I press it, but it is tender. It is still red and slightly swollen like in the picture. Is it possibly cause of a dissolvable stitch inside? Is it infected?

In general, post-surgical infections may occur 3-5 days postoperative. Based on your description, your body may have formed a "suture abscess", and drainage with topical antibiotic may be curative, depending on your examination. Please make your surgeon aware. Thank you. Dr Joseph

Hi, thank you for your question. I agree, it looks like a stitch abscess. Hot salt water bathing of the area will help, and gentle cleaning with a cotton bud and saline. You need to return to see your surgeon who will probably remove a retained stitch. He may prescribe you antibiotics but it will probably get better on it's own. Topical Bactroban or Mupirocin ointment will help.
