This is a battle that many times we lose and in some cases we win... sort of. I agree with those that answered below, Veneers and porcelain crowns, though many times more opaque than I would like them to be in order to block out the stains, are the treatment of choice and are consistent with their results. This is my only treatment option for my patients with severe tetracycline staining. For those with mild to moderate tetracycline staining I have a had mixed results with the use of two systems. One is called Zoom! Whitespeed/At home Zoom! nightWhiteIn this system an in office 2 hour whitening is completed and the patient is sent home to continue whitening for the next 2 weeks at night using custom trays and Zoom gel. This is then followed up with maintenance gel the patient uses 1-3 times per week during the day for 15 min sessionsThe second system is Kor whitening. In this system trays and desensitizing liquid and whitening gels are given to the patient to use for 3 weeks prior to in office Kor whitening. Patients continue to whiten their teeth over night 1 week every month with their trays. As you can see, whitening tetracycline stained teeth is not a quick fix. It is a constant battle and one that may only be solved with a more permanent solution
I do not find that bleaching works very well on tetracycline stains due to its intrinsic nature. Tetracycline stains are best treated with porcelain veneers. When performed correctly these stains can be blocked out 100% and give you a fantastic result in just two visits. Good luck.
In my experience, tetracycline stained teeth do not improve much with bleaching. This is because the tooth is stained intrinsically. Teeth whitening, such as zoom, removes surface staining. I have found the best option for improving your smile if you have tetracycline stained teeth is to have porcelain veneers placed. It's a great investment, they last a long time, and they typically take 2 appointments. Please make sure you do your research prior to any treatment, and you visit a dentist that is very experienced in cosmetics.
In my experience, Zoom, as well as other professional whiteners provide inconsistent and limited results relative to stains caused by tetracycline use.Porcelain veneers would be my #1 suggestion.Best of luck,James Asaf, DDS
Tetracycline staining is the toughest stain to bleach. The system that gives the best results is KOR whitening. You have a better chance of improving your smile with veneers which allow you to control the color of your teeth. Whitening is a second class citizen when it comes to tetracycline stain.
My suggestion would have been to give you an extra 10-15 minute session during your initial whitening treatment. Best of luck,James Asaf, DDS...
Thank you for your question. The answer is it depends the concentration of active ingredient in the whitening solution you use. If there are no directions on the package, you should ask for directions a doctor, who dispenced the product as he/she is familiar with it.I recommend my patients u...
