My platelet count is 110,000. Is this count too low to perform a safe tummy tuck/breast augmentation procedure?

if you have had successful pregmancies without excessive bleeding, it seems that you would be Ok to undergo elective surgery. However, to be safe a consultation with a hematologist will be the best way to make sure. Lab evaluation will determine if you are more susceptible to bleeding peri operatively.

While Low platelet counts can be associated with more bleeding you have had this condition for 9 years and went thru pregnancy . Did you have abnormal bleeding with that challenge. Do you have problems with routine cuts? You would already know if you did and would have probably mentioned that fact. I would operate on you after a hematologist saw you and completed a bleeding time profile and gave a clearance. Also would chose to do in a hospital that had blood products available just in case.

 Your platelet count is a borderline low level.  This poses a moderate risk for surgery.     With any low platelet count the risk for bleeding increases.  It may be advisable that your surgery be performed in a hospital setting and you should have your blood typed and cross matched  prior to surgery  in the event of an emergency. I would also recommend  24 hours of inpatient observation to assure that you are stable from a cardiovascular standpoint.    the risks of surgery should be discussed at length with the surgeon. You should understand that cosmetic surgery is elective and that given your platelet count potential for bleeding significant complication does exist.   However with the proper precautions patients can undergo elective surgery.

A normal platelet count is 150,000-350,000. A count of 110, is a little low, but not so low that it should cause a problem during a mommy makeover procedure.If you have been previously worked up for thrombocytopenia (low platelet level), have your doctor send the plastic surgeon a letter stating that you had been worked up, and found to have a benign lower platelet level. A platelet count of 110 is not a contraindication for surgery. Some people run low. What is important is if you have any other medical issues or if that platelet counts tends to drop  intermittently. You want to be sure that around the time of your surgery you are stable.

The platelet count itself is not a contraindication to surgery; more important will be a complete history/physical examination to determine whether you  are at a greater risk for bleeding  during surgery. If in doubt, seek consultation with a hematologist,  for complete preoperative evaluation/“clearance”. Best wishes.

I would describe your platelet count as borderline low.  It does not increase your risk for significant bleeding.  If in doubt ,or there are other concerns,  please visit with your internist or a hematologist for clearance for your elective procedure.  Best wishes.
