I've heard that darker skinned women prefer this procedure but are at a higher risk of suffering from skin discoloration after having it. Is this true?
Answer: Dark Skin and Chemical Peels Deep peels are not the best option for darker skin types. Fractionated or radiofrquency devices are much more safe and give long term excellent results. My patients are loving the clear and brilliant laser for rejuvenation, scars, pigmentation, and overall textural improvements of the skin. This is very safe in dark skin types. Microneedling is another example of something that is also safe and effective. Best, Dr. Emer.

Answer: Chemical Peels for Darker Skin Thanks for your question, and the answer is yes – darker-skinned individuals are at more risk of having skin discoloration as a result of having a medium or deep chemical peel to their faces. Chemical peeling is a controlled burn of the skin, whereby a chemical is applied and depending on the peeling agent used, removes layers of skin until it is appropriately neutralized. Superficial peels are relatively common and can provide a great deal of benefits when used correctly. Side effects with them, when done by qualified individuals, are quite uncommon. When we discuss medium-depth chemical peels, most all of these should be done by a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, and I would find out from them how often they do these in today’s laser world, and to describe to you all the potential risks and benefits from the procedure. As well, find out what kind of chemical or chemicals they will be applying to your skin, what is the concentration(s) they will be using, how they will neutralize it, and what the post-operative course will be. Most of use will use TCA – and the strengths will vary from 35%-50% for medium depth chemical peels. Pigmentary concerns and the potential for scarring are the major adverse events with these peels. The costs will vary based on where you are located but most would, on average, be between $500 and $1000 per peel, based on what is done, how it is done, and again, location of where you are.

Answer: What are the risks involved with receiving a medium chemical peel? Medium depth peels should only be performed by experienced physicians. I prefer to use TCA peels for medium depth treatment in my practice. We can alter the concentration of the peel solution based on the skin type. Risks with TCA peels are skin discoloration and scarring, though these are minor risks with the TCA peel especially in experienced hands. I prefer to perform as series of 3-4 TCA peels spaced about 1 month apart for the best results. Seek out consultation with a facial plastic surgeon, plastic surgeon, or dermatologist who is experienced in peels. The art of performing medium and deep chemical peels is becoming more and more uncommon, however, since many practices rely solely on the technology of lasers. I wish you well!
