I've suffered with chronic trochanteric hip bursitis for 8 years and get cortisone injections every 6 months to alleviate the pain. I'm scheduled for hip and stomach lipo on Wednesday 8/5/22. I'm wondering if having lipo in are area around the bursa will cause a flare up of bursitis. The PS said it should not be a problem, but I'm concerned. I really want the lipo, but not if it's going to make the bursitis worse.
Answer: Liposuction Liposuction will be done in the fat under your skin, and your bursitis is actually inside the hip joint. These are two different areas, and one should not affect the other.

Answer: Liposuction and bursitis Dear Nurturing298528, there is no guarantee that liposuction of hip area won't cause issues with trochanteric bursitis. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: Liposuction and bursitis The chance of having your bursitis made worse by having liposuction is extremely unlikely and something would have to go majorly wrong for that to happen. Surgeons are sometimes found of saying never say never and never say always but generally speaking this is not something you should lose sleep over. In my opinion your biggest concern should be if you’ve chosen the right plastic surgeon to get the results you’re hoping for. Delivering consistent quality liposuction results is more difficult than most people believe and this includes many plastic surgeons. Liposuction results are permanent and irreversible and if done poorly can leave people disfigured. There is a substantial variation in skill among providers including board-certified plastic surgeons with overall good reputations. For this procedure you need to know that the surgeon has mastered body contouring and you should do that by properly vetting providers. I recommend all patients have multiple in person consultations. During consultations ask each provider to share their entire collection of abdominal liposuction before and after pictures. Simply seeing a handful of pre-selected pictures which most likely represent the best results of the providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of an average results look like in the hands of each provider. for that reason patients should ask providers to open up their portfolio and show all of their before and after pictures or at least as many as they’re willing to. Ask the provider to show as many pictures as they have of patients who have similar body characteristics to your own. You may want to ask them to show you examples of excellent outcomes, average outcomes and less than outcomes. we all have them and I think any talented experienced confident surgeon should have no problem showing a variety of outcomes. An experience provider should have no difficulty showing you a minimum of 50 sets up before and after pictures of abdominal liposuction. Highly experience surgeons will have hundreds or even thousands of before and after pictures for this common procedure. Look carefully at all the results to make sure there are no contour irregularities or unnatural looking outcomes. Ask the surgeon what areas were treated and what areas were not treated and ask him to point out transition zone between treated and untreated areas. Personally I view the torso as a single anatomic unit and try to treat the entire torso if doing abdominal liposuction. This means Leaving no part of the tour so untreated except the breast so patients have a natural even a thing of fat distribution without transition zone from treated to untreated areas. A full torso includes upper abdomen, lower abdomen, love handles, waist, full back and under arms all the way to the side of the breast. Another important area to look at the results is the transition zone on the lowest part of the torso to see if all the love handles have been removed and if the contour from the buttocks to the waist has an ideal S curve. Finally I recommend reading all reviews on various physician review websites avoiding providers with any significant number of justified negative reviews. The absence of justified negative reviews is more important than more telling than having an abundance of positive reviews. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
