How long should I wait to consider revising lateral crural strut grafts? (Photos)

Question

I had a septorhinoplasty 19 months ago where LCSGs were sutured in with 5-0 Vicryl. I do not like how wide they make my nose, how stiff and uncomfortable they feel, and the subtle asymmetry on the sides. Some doctors have suggested that grafts can cause warping in the overlay skin over time. Should I wait for more swelling to subside or seek revision assessment now? Is it uncommon to have LCSGs removed for the reasons above? Or difficult? Thank you in advance.

Nineteen months is an adequate time to consider consulting either with the original surgeon or other surgeons to discuss the removal of any cartilage grafts which you are not pleased with.  Now is the right time, because it is obviously a matter of concern to you.  What did your original operating surgeon say?  What did he or she propose?  A second or third opinion is always valuable.  You have experiencing the sojourn of having the primary operation, so can fully understand what a secondary operation would involve.

The timing is appropriate for a revision if you elect to have one. I would see your original surgeon and discuss the pros and cons. Usually lateral crural strut grafts are placed to correct a structural weakness in that area.  As in much of rhinoplasty one needs to balance function and aesthetics. It would be important to review your breathing status at the time of your previous operation and how it is now.  Basically have a thoughtful discussion with your surgeon.
