On February 1 I scheduled my breast augmentation for April 23 and just today found out the Ideal Implants that I selected are now backordered until June 3. I had heard this could happen with Ideal Implants as it has in the past. Why is this the case and will this keep happening? Should I choose another type of implant or can I count on Ideal Implants being available in June? I really wanted the Ideal Implants but I don't want to reschedule my life again!
Answer: Ideal implant availability The limited availability of Ideal implants is related to a manufacturing issue which led to a cessation in production. This sort of issue can arise for any manufacturer. The frequency with which it has occurred with Ideal implants may simply be a function of novelty. The best advice is to select an implant with which you are comfortable. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Answer: Ideal implants on backorder? Hello, you would probably need to contact the company directly to get a complete answer to your question. My basic understanding based on interacting with our distributor in Canada is that demand is simply greater than supply at this point. I assume that the company will ramp up production to meet demand, and that eventually backorders will not be an issue. As with other surgeons who have responded, I agree that your decision whether or not to wait is a personal one. If your surgeon has explained the other implants that are currently available (important information like their rupture and contracture rates, unique risks etc) and one of them is a good fit for you, then it would be reasonable to proceed with a different implant. However, if you want Ideal implants for their unique advantages then perhaps it would be worth waiting several months. This is something to discuss with your surgeon.

Answer: Implant type Dear MinnieJP, breast implant type and sizing selection is a complicated process and requires a detailed consultation that includes a discussion of your goals, a detailed examination, and a lengthy discussion. But the decision will always start and end with the patient. When it comes to sizing, we have all of our patients find 3 photos of their desired breast size. We ask for naked breast photos because clothing can obscure the true size (push up bras). Next, we consult with patients and go over the photos and take detailed breast measurements during a physical exam. Next, we using a sizing algorithm to determine a range of implants that will work based on the exam and the measurements.Lastly, during the operation, we use silicone sizers in the operating room to see how the size actually looks in the breast. We sit the patient up in the operating room, while asleep of course, and compare the sizer result with their desired look photos. If it is too small, we start the process over with a slightly larger implant. We don't stop until we get the perfect match.Of all of my breast augmentation patients, every one of them has been happy with their size due to this detailed and meticulous process. You don't want to invest time and money into a result that is either too big or too small. You should discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon and make sure that your surgeon understands your goals. Answer: Implants You should proceed for which implant you feel comfortable with, whether that means waiting or not. The implant selection should be based on a combination of your desired size, soft tissue dynamics, breast base diameter and skin elasticity. I recommend an in-office examination as well as a detailed discussion with a surgeon who you are comfortable with. Finally, make sure your surgeon is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
