How long to do wet to dry dressing on open wound following breast implants? (Photo)

Question

I am 5 weeks post op and developed an open wound. Does this look like I should continue doing wet to dry dressing or switch to method. Just asking for best suggestions at this time so I no longer have a PS.

Dear Msmal87,this type of wound is not uncommon after breast surgery. It is usually caused by poor blood flow. I would suggest you to follow your surgeon's instructions and keep your wound clean and covered. It can take few weeks or months for wound to fully heal. Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

Hello,Wet to dry dressings are the most effective way to keep wounds clean and to encourage healing.  However, they need to be monitored by a surgeon to make sure you are on track. Your photos shows fibrinous exudate and dried secretions that need to be removed so that dressings can be most effective. This can be done in office without any anesthesia (it doesn't hurt), but your surgeon needs to perform it. Best of luck!

I strongly recommend seeing a plastic surgeon, even if it's not the one that did your surgery. That wound needs critical attention. There are sutures exposed, some necrotic tissue to debride at the very minimum. If you have an implant in place, then that's at serious risk for infection. There are many issues at play here - you cannot treat this on your own!

Surgeons are obligated to be available to their patients until the patient is fully recovered.  If you went abroad or out of town, you are experiencing firsthand, the downfalls of doing that.  You will have a scar and your suture should be removed so find a local surgeon who is willing to see you in follow-up and for further management... but expect fees for each visit.  Your would will heal with good wound care...

Sorry your situation has led you to not have your original plastic surgeon available. We have many excellent plastic surgeons here in San Diego. You may wish to also consider going to a hospital-based wound care center (which often have plastic surgeons on staff) to manage your wound. While your care might be covered under insurance, as a complication of elective cosmetic surgery, you may have some financial responsibility for paying for your care. However, this should NOT be a deterrent to your coming in to a plastic surgeon to be seen as you want to make sure your implant is not threatened with infection or exposure.
