Is SCAAR FX a better treatment for acne scarring than Total FX or Deep FX?

Question

Lumenis recently introduced SCAAR FX, a mode for its UltraPulse fractional CO2 laser which allows treatment up to a depth of 4 mm, double that of DeepFX mode. How is this going to affect the treatment of atrophic acne scars on the face? Is it going to substantially improve the results achievable with DeepFX or totalfx?

SCAAR FX is too deep for acne scarring.  Total FX can be tailored for good results, but often needs to be in combination with fillers, needling, subcision, and TCA cross depending on your individual scars. Best, Dr. Emer.

SCAAR FX is typically indicated for more severe scars such as burn scars or thickened hypertrophic and keloid scars. It would likely penetrate too deeply for acne scar treatment.

The SCAAR FX mode for the Ultrapulse will allow deeper penetration of the focal beams that are generated with DEEP FX.  When it comes to improvement of acne scars using this technology, the results can be unpredictable and depend on multiple factors, including the extent of the scar tissue resulting from the acne.  I have used settings in SCAAR FX selectively for deeper penetration, and it sometimes proves useful.  If ones adds other kinds of therapy along with the CO2 laser, the results may be improved further.Saul Berger, MDLos Angeles, CA
