During an Abdominoplasty, could a belly button be removed altogether?

The short answer to your question is yes the umbilicus could be removed. However if the navel was unsightly it is reconstructed at the time of an abdominoplasty in looks quite nice.

Although it is technically possible to remove the belly button at the time of a tummy tuck it is normally not considered advisable from anesthetic standpoint.  Very likely your surgeon will want you to sign a specific waiver regarding this situation.

Yes, the umbilicus (belly button) can be removed altogether. There is no functional use for a belly button as an adult, except to collect lint :-).

I go to great lengths to salvage the belly button, even when it is scared from previous surgery or stretched out from an umbilical hernia or really, really loose and long from massive weight loss.  Yes, it can just be cut off without any functional loss but I can tell you that an abdomen without a belly button just looks SO WRONG.  I have had to sacrifice a couple of belly buttons over the years due to terrible scarring and damage to the blood supply.  I can hardly stand to look at those patient's after photos.  It just looks so weird not to have this little remnant of fetal life.  And constructing a belly button can be done but it is rarely as nice as what can be achieved with the original.By the way, the belly button is just the scar left after the umbilical cord falls off.  Mine reminds me of my attachment to my mother back in the womb.  If any of my three kids had their belly buttons removed, I would take it very personally!

Removing the belly button during an abdominoplasty would certainly be easier than the normal procedure, but be careful what you ask for. Once it is removed, it is more difficult to recreate it at a later date if you change your mind.

It is easier to remove the belly button than move it.  Though rarely requested, it is very simple to do, and not a problem.  It is your last remembrance of your connection to your mother
