No apples prior to Breast augmentation; why not?

Hello,Great question. There is a Polyphenol similar to Quercitin called "Rutin" found in apples which is believed to act like Coumadin; as a blood thinner. I don't personally restrict apple-eating before surgery, but many herbals and supplements are on my, "avoid"  list along with medications for this reason. Each Plastic Surgeon has their own post op protocols based on their research and I recommend that you trust your chosen Surgeon's recommendations. All the best!

There are a number of foods and supplements that can thin the blood but I do not restrict diet before plastic surgery.  The most important issue regarding complications is the skill of your plastic surgeon so make sure yours is Certified by the American  Board of Plastic Surgery and has favorable reviews.

I have no idea. It is not a restriction that I've ever placed on my patients, but every surgeon has his or her own pre-op protocol Why not give the office a call and ask? Could be a typo. Best, Dr. Nazarian

If you love apples...then eat the apples. Aside from alcohol use leading up to surgery, I do not employ any strict diet restrictions. I recommend a stool softener starting the day of surgery and continuing until you are off of narcotic pain medication to combat any constipation risk. Good Luck.

Hello and thank you for your question. Many surgeons do give this list of dietary restrictions to their patients with their preoperative paperwork. The one I use is written by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. These foods are listed to avoid or eat minimally. It is a precaution because  these foods if eaten in large quantities may affect clotting. Others listed are Almonds, Apples, All berries, garlic, Ginger, Grapes, Prunes, Tomatoes , and Wine. Hello Bethw. I believe the Mayo clinic says that apples and other high fiber foods can complicate the GI tract with certain surgeries. Therefore, they recommend to avoid such foods before surgery. Best of luck on your breast augmentation, Dr. ALDO.

Apples are not restricted in my office. I recommend a balanced diet and multivitamins and Vitamin C for healing.

I don't want to make light of surgery, but apples is a new one for breast augmentation. Perhaps it is because 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away' and since you are going to have to see the doctor to perform the surgery, they don't want you eating any apples?I'm sure if you check with your doctor he will have a reason for the dietary restriction. Hope that helps,CDK
