What procedure can fix knuckling after rhinoplasty? (Photo)

Question

I had my septorhinoplasty March 7, putting me just past 6 months. I've recently noticed a hard bump on the left side of my tip. Swelling has gone down, and now i can see it. I saw my surgeon about this and he said he could do a procedure to shave it down after the 1 year mark. I was very nervous and emotional during the appointment, so I didn't ask a lot of questions. Could you please describe this procedure, and what all is associated? What are the risks? Is it fairly easy? Thank you so much!

Minor asymmetries can be very common after rhinoplasty, as scarring forces can pull the cartilage in one direction or another.  If you develop this type of asymmetry (domes of the lower lateral cartilages), many times a simple revision procedure can be performed where the cartilage "knuckling" can be trimmed.  The down time is minimal, swelling may occur for a few weeks, and the results can be expected by 3-6 months.

Revision rhinoplasty is more difficult than a primary rhinoplasty due to alterations in the normal anatomy, and scar tissue present.  If you talking about knuckling of the lower lateral cartilages,(bossa) this can usually be addressed by shaving down that offending cartilage.   If you are talking about  knuckling of the upper lateral cartilages, this can be addressed by shaving that area down, or potential placement of the spreader graft if it is concave.  Best to talk to your operative surgeon and wait a full year before undergoing a revision
