Talking normally after surgery?

Question

I have a job where I have to talk on the phone pretty frequently. I'll probably take about a week off from work, but I was wondering, how long after surgery does it typically take to sound "normal" again? I mean, considering that I won't be able to breathe through my nose for a while, I'm assuming I'm going to sound like I have a cold or something, right? I'm just trying to schedule some work stuff. Thanks!

Hello and thank you for your question.  I usually recommend taking off one week from work.  Your speech should be normal by one week.   Make sure you specifically look at before and after
pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon
and not just a computer animation system. The most important
aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek
consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate
you in person.

Some patients with widely patent preoperative nasal airways sound terrific the day of dressing removal. If you have a relatively narrow preoperative nasal airway, you may be more sensitive to a change and experience congestion for two weeks or longer, depending on your condition. Thank you. Dr Joseph

I usually get this questions with my patients that are on screen or television and I suggest that it will be about 2 weeks before they feel as though their voice is "normal" again.  This can be slightly different for those who have significant allergy issues and some secondary or tertiary rhinoplasty procedures, but 2 weeks is where I believe most primary rhinoplasty patients are back to "normal" voice.Best WishesWirth Plastic Surgery

When the splint comes off and as long as you do not have any packing after that time, your speech will likely go back to normal.
