i had my operation 5 weeks ago...and i got the packing removed after 8 days since the surgery..i breathe well now....but my sense of smell has been decreased..for the first two weeks i wasn't able to smell or taste anything at all....so i told my surgeon he gave antibiotic and oral cortisone for 5 days... after that i start to get better now i can smell and taste a lot better but still it is not 100% i can tell its 60% ...and its been 5 weeks till now is it fully returned ?? i'm so worry please help

Thank you for your question. Any nasal blockage can cause a decreased sense of smell. After nasal and sinus surgery, the sinonasal lining is swollen and inflamed for several weeks to months. This swelling is a normal part of the healing process and gradually improves with time; the healing time is different for every patient. It is also possible that you have some dried crusts that are affecting your breathing and sense of smell. You may benefit from nasal saline or steroid sprays, or an office exam with cleaning. Please continue to follow-up with your surgeon with any concerns.
