Lipo vs tummy tuck revision? (Photo)

Question

I had a tummy tuck for years ago and as you can see in the pictures, I still have some loose skin. Do you think that having liposuction will help me or having a tummy tuck revision? As far as my back, I definitely want to have liposuction. Do you recommend jplasma?

Hello, 
There is cracked skin, skin laxity, irregular suture line in the lower abdomen. I recommend Vaser liposuction on the abdomen and correction of the suture line on the lower abdomen. There is also fat on the waist and back. Vaserlipo and Renuvion J Plasma would be my two recommendations for you.

Thank you for the photos. There seem to be a few things going on and include some excess fat, some skin laxity, and some scar deformities. The treatment really will depend on what bothers you most and how much you want to improve things. Liposuction alone may reduce the excess fat, but the skin laxity will increase. J-plasma in my opinion will not help much in your case. The best possible outcome would be to combine liposuction with a revision of your tummy tuck - this would tighten the skin, remove fat, and smooth out the scar.  Revisions like this are a large part of my body contouring practice and many patients travel from California for this. Make sure to see an experienced board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in lipo and tummy tucks, since your case will take a high level of expertise.

Liposuction and scar revision of the entire tummy tuck will lower your scar, flatten your contours, and give definition to your belly. Unfortunately, I am now convinced that J Plasma does not have the ability to tighten skin that is thick, like back skin. I do not recommend using it because it will be a waste of money. However, J Plasma of the abdomen after liposuction is completed would be a good idea.

You will need a revision of the tummy tuck for the excess skin. I also recommend a circumferential extension, which is basically a body lift. The excess skin on the back will not be corrected by liposuction only.

I would start with liposuction and add J plasma for the back. If the dog ears do not shrink, then they can be revised later in the office under local anesthesia.

Thank you for submitting this question. It can be very difficult, even for experienced surgeons, to know exactly how the skin will react to liposuction. In general, when you already feel you have loose skin (not just extra tissue), liposuction is more likely to make that sensation worse. If you have stretch marks or other areas of loose skin, the chance that your skin does not retract the way you want it to becomes higher. Liposuction combined with a revision tummy tuck may be more likely to address that area above the belly button. For the question about your back, jplasma is designed to help increase the amount your skin retracts after liposuction. If you were to have this procedure and still have extra skin, the surgical option would be to extend the incision onto your back to get a full body lift. This can be a nuanced discussion to have with your surgeon as it very much depends on your goals and expectations.
