Considering a rhinoplasty - will the age of my surgeon or technique used affect my results?

Great question - and the best you could ask in my opinion. In my eyes rhinoplasty is the most difficult operation we do due to multiple factors - millimetres make a difference unlike most other operations. In addition every nose is different regardless of how they look preop. We also cant control how the bones, cartilage and soft tissue heals. Experience matters more in this operation than any other. It is not really about the age of the surgeon but more the experience as you definitely get better results over time.

Hello! Thank you for your question. I can say that your surgeon's age is not make any difference but surgeon's experience will make a big difference. You should choose your surgeon according to his/her successful surgery and how many years s/he has in this field. Also the technique will be decided by your surgeon due to you skin type, your wishes about your surgery etc. If you can provide photos from front of your face, from the side of your face and 1 meter away I would be able to make a proper evaluation. Hi @softgrass! Greeting from Beverly Hills, CA. This is an excellent question. A rhinoplasty in my opinion is one of the most difficult procedures to perform. The skill, artistry, and technique of the surgeon is more important than the age. In my practice, I utilize piezosurgery. Piezosurgery is a more gentle technique that allows for greater precision. Less bruising and swelling is common with Piezosurgery. In a typical rhinoplasty, a hammer and chisel technique is performed leading to more inadvertent fractures. I hope this was helpful!

Thankyou for your question. In my professional opinion you may benefit from closed atraumatic rhinoplasty which can address your concern in the least invasive way without cutting the tip of the nose. Additionally, your nose can be straightened and the tip can be reduced and defined and if you have any functional issues, they can also be addressed at the same time. Moreover, you may also look into facial rejuvenation surgeries alongside rhinoplasty surgery. However, the age does not matter as much as experience so you can say experience comes with age. Try looking at surgeons who have performed over 8000 surgeries and are actively teaching their methods as well.

In general, a rhinoplasty surgeon with more experience will tend to be better than someone just starting out, but that's not a guarantee. Even surgeons with years of experience may not be a great surgeon. Knowing all of the intricate techniques is not really important. What is important is that you go on 2-3 consultations with surgeons that specialize in rhinoplasty that can do computer imaging to give an idea of what you may like. You should also be able to look at many photos of his/her work to see if you like the results.

Exoerience with rhinoplasty is extremely important. Most surgeons spend a career refining their techniques. You will likely notice older surgeons doing more closed rhinoplasty and younger surgeons open rhinoplasty. That’s because fewer and fewer university programs reach closed rhinoplasty which is unfortunate

Since rhinoplasty may be considered by some to be the most difficult plastic surgical procedure, visiting specialists with years of experience is better than someone fresh out of training. After 24 years in practice, I am happy to say that our results keep getting better! And my rhinoplasty teacher operated well into his 70s before retiring, and he put out world-class results till the end. Great question!!!

There are many factors that make a good rhinoplasty surgeon. Age and experience is one of them. Having said that, there can be young surgeons with less experience who have a better artistic sense and possess the skills to produce better results than a more experienced surgeon. But if you want to look at experience by itself, especially as it relates to a complicated procedure such as rhinoplasty, I would recommend using the 10 by 100 rule. Meaning that ideally, your surgeon has been doing rhinoplasty for at least 10 years, and he or she does at least 100 rhinoplasties per year.

Board-certified plastic surgeons are qualified to do Rhinoplasty. Plastic surgeon's have undergone rigorous testing and training become the elite in the medical field. Those that have undergone plastic surgery training will proudly display their board certification. Those doctors that label themselves as cosmetic surgeons have not undergone rigorous training or selection to be the best. So experience matters seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon.
