Should I reschedule my lip filler or should I be okay?

I'm about to get lip fillers for the first time this Friday but the problem is I already made weekend plans out of town with my friends. We were going to celebrate my 23rd birthday and I am pretty sure there will be drinking involved. My apt. is Friday at 9:00 A.M and we won't arrive to our destination until Saturday around 10 P.M. Will I probably look ridiculously swollen and would this night cause more bruising and pain for me?

After a lip augmentation, you will notice the plumping and fullness in your lips immediately.  Swelling generally lasts about a day, with some people experiencing swelling and bruising up to three days after the injections. I always recommend applying ice frequently for the first 24 hours after the procedure.  Bruising can occur post-injections, especially if you have a tendency to bruise, or are taking anything that thins your blood (such as Aspirin, fish oil, and of course alcohol).  I would recommend waiting until after your event; you'll want to be able to enjoy it! Happy birthday!

I appreciate your concern.I think you should postpone your lip injections until after your birthday party. Don't forget to avoid alcohol 24 hours before the injection and aspirin and ibuprofen a whole week before the injections.Good luck. Dr. ALDO

It sounds like it might be best to wait. There may be some swelling, which can vary. I prefer to use a micro cannula to inject the lips to prevent bruising. Look for a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon who is an expert in fillers.

If you've never done your lips before, then best to reschedule as you don't know what to expect.  But if you've done it before and you did well, then you can always ice more so then you normally would after the treatment and consider taking a Benadryl the night of the treatment as well.  At the end of the day, you may still be a little sore Saturday night.  The worse would be a bruise.  SO option 1 would be better than option two.

It's difficult to predict the amount of swelling you may have. Swelling can last 1-2 weeks after your injections. I recommend injections with cannulas to limit swelling. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Lexi.   While swelling after lip injections usually lasts only 24 hours or so, I would recommend putting off your lip augmentation until after your birthday celebration. There are no guarantees, and since you have never had this done before, it is uncertain how long the swelling will last for you. Thank you for your question. It is common to have some bruising and swelling after lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers which can last up to 2 weeks. It is advisable to avoid alcohol and NSAID’s before and after treatment as they tend to thin the blood and increase bruising and swelling. The lips are notorious for swelling 1-2 days after injection, and drinking alcohol within 1-2 days increases the chance of more swelling and bruising, so I would reschedule to avoid stares or questions. Most importantly is to find a highly trained and experienced cosmetic physician injector such as a dermatologist to optimize results & safety.

I would definitely recommend to have your lip injections after your birthday trip. Swelling and bruising is very common post lip fillers. Give yourself at least 1 - 2 weeks post treatment to recuperate and let your bruises subside should you experience any. Best of Luck,

My rule of thumb is to not do your filler if getting swollen and bruised would ruin upcoming events or plans.  While most people do not bruise, it is always possible that you will get a big bruise.  After lip injections, most of the swelling goes down in about 48 hours, but it can last longer.I think you should reschedule.   Make sure that you stay away from anything that thins your blood for about a week before your injections.  These include Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Aspirin (unless prescribed by a doctor), Vitamin E, Fish Oil and red wine.  All of this increase the risk of bruising.
