How severe must a UTI be to make capsular contracture of submuscular 410s likely? (Photo)

Question

I am 5.5 weeks post op. Had 475 (left) and 375 (right) cc high profile 410s (gummy bears) implanted below the muscle. Symptoms of a UTI came on today. Within 2 hours I had my prescription and took 500 mg cipro. I know capsular contracture is an immune response and for this reason infections increase the risk. Is this true for any infection in the body, big or small? If the infection is not in the area of the implant is the risk very low? Does a quick response with antibiotics lower the chance?

Some surgeons believe that contractures can be caused by situations that increase bacteria in the body such as dental work or infections. There is no conclusive proof for this.  I would continue with your antibiotics and continue to massage your breasts as directed. If there is any indications that your breasts are getting firm, please see your surgeon immediately.

Any bacterial infection including a UTI can cause seeding to the implant
in a manner that may cause either a capsular contracture with or  without an overt infection. Prompt antibiotic
treatment for bacterial infections are therefore indicated to minimize this
risk and since you did that you will most likely be spared.

Capsular contracture is not an immune response. We don't really know the reason for capsular contracture although the body always response to a breast implant is a foreign body. The possibility of infection leading to capsular contracture at a later time is theoretically possible.

There is no good scientific studies linking capsular contracture to infections in other parts of the body. Treat the UTI as recommended by your family doctor and follow up with your Board Certified PS regarding your post-op breast implant condition

There are no strong studies suggesting infections can cause a capsular contracture, but if you have a UTI it should be treated appropriately. Good luck.

Thank you for your question.  There is no strong clinical evidence that a urinary tract infection will cause a capsular contraction.  However rapid institution of appropriate antibiotic therapy as soon as the UTI is diagnosed should protect you.
