The answer is a little complicated, in that, ThermiTight can definitely be used to "melt" or destroy fat cells, if that is a goal of the procedure, but it can also be avoided, provided your surgeon is an experienced ThermiTight user. The beauty of ThermiTight is that we doctors can have very rigid control of the treatment temperature, since the probe tells us the internal temperature, while the infrared camera monitors temperature of the skin surface. The internal temperature can be set by the doctor, depending upon the desired result. For purely skin tightening, I would select lower heat than I would if I were also wanting to achieve some fat reduction and I would make sure to keep the internal probe immediately beneath the skin and not down into the fatty layer. Even with that, there is the possibility that a very small of fat can be damaged, but this is usually not noticeable. Similarly, any device that delivers heat to the fat layer can also inadvertently damage some fat cells, but again, this is usually negligible.
