Hi, I’m a 46-year-old female interested in learning about options to tighten the skin under my chin. Am I a good candidate for submentoplasty? I’m 5’5” and 130 lbs. I’m looking for a surgical, longer-lasting solution, but I’d prefer to avoid a full face or neck lift at this time. My plan is to possibly consider a facelift in about three years.

Hi! Thank you for sharing your concerns and goals. For skin laxity under the chin, especially if you’re looking for a surgical, longer-lasting solution without committing to a full facelift, there are a few options to consider:

Submentoplasty: This procedure targets the area under the chin specifically. It can involve removing excess fat and tightening the underlying muscles, which helps improve the contour of the jawline and reduce sagging. It’s generally less invasive than a full neck or facelift and can give a noticeable improvement in the submental area.

Liposuction with platysmaplasty: If there is some fat under the chin, this can be combined with muscle tightening to enhance definition.

Skin-only tightening procedures: There are minimally invasive options like thread lifts or energy-based devices (ultrasound or radiofrequency), but these are usually less dramatic than surgical options and results may be temporary.

Given your height, weight, and goals, a submentoplasty can be a good fit for improving the contour under your chin while leaving the rest of your face and neck untouched. The results are long-lasting, and it can be staged before considering a facelift in the future.

Morpheus 8 is a non-invasive skin and soft tissue tightening treatment that is consistently amazing in our patients. We use the Morpheus to exact fractional induced RF into the skin or tissue in order to tighten collagen and stimulate contraction of the tissue. For acne scars, it is quite useful to build collagen in patients who have atrophic scars but is not very productive for ice-pick scars which require TCA Cross. For tissue tightening, Morpheus is ideal for the face and neck and we often combine it with CO2 laser or Ultherapy to further enhance results. Chemical peels and skin resurfacing should be done at least 5 to 7 days after, but can be performed earlier, depending on treatment severity. Avoid exfoliating skin treatments before Morpheus and expect a period of 2-4 weeks for skin contraction to set in.
