I’m 26, on dialysis for 7 months. Close to normal Kidney function, not on a transplant list at this time. I’m considered to have EndStage Renal disease because of my time on dialysis, but my Nephrologist is not yet 100% I will stay on. I go twice a week for 3 hours. I have a central venous catheter that I use for dialysis (Neck access) and have lost over 100 pounds, my arms have always been large, but now have a lot of skin and hinders my movements. Would surgery be ok? Would a Dr preform on me?
Answer: Surgery If you medical doctor and your nephrologist clear you for elective surgery, you should be able to have this procedure done. The fluids needed for surgery will need to be addressed by your nephrologist.

Answer: Brachioplasty with a CVC Catheter in Place Thank you for your inquiry about the feasibility of undergoing a brachioplasty or arm lift while having a CVC catheter in place for dialysis. Yes, you can still undergo a brachioplasty despite having a CVC (Central Venous Catheter) in place. The CVC catheter, which is inserted into a major vein leading to your heart via the neck, will not interfere with the arm reduction procedure since the catheter doesn't extend down your arm. The brachioplasty procedure typically lasts about 3 to 4 hours and requires general anesthesia. You should anticipate a recovery period of about two weeks. It's crucial to communicate with both your plastic surgeon and nephrologist when considering this surgery. Coordinating the surgery with your dialysis schedule and assessing any necessary adjustments to your medications will be essential for a safe surgical experience. In summary, while it's possible to have a brachioplasty with a CVC catheter in place, close communication and collaboration between your healthcare providers will be essential. Wishing you the best on your surgical journey. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Dialysis patient Safety is always our number one concern in surgery. It is not likely if you have End Stage Renal Disease and currently require dialysis that you would be a good surgical candidate for an arm lift. I encourage you to discuss your interest in the procedure with your nephrologist. At minimum you would need surgical clearance from this specialist.

Answer: Arm lift Dear aliveinoregon, you should be healthy prior to elective procedures. You will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.
