Light therapy is often the treatment chosen for areas of pigmentation and redness in the skin.  Both IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and BBL (BroadBand Light) are light therapy treatments.

BBL is a form of broadband light treatment made by Sciton. In my practice,  I utilize the Palomar Icon platform for IPL, generally considered the most powerful IPL device.  Both devices produce good results in the right hands.  Stating that BBL is superior is questionable.

Hi LD.  The most important word you used in your question is PERMANENT.  There is no cure for Melasma so lasers will not offer a permanent solution.  In addition, the "rebound" from IPL, BBL, Fraxel and others after the treatments are stopped can mean that the Melasma gets worse.If you decide to...

IPL and BBL are appropriate in a small subset of cases, especially when combined with light chemical peels and Melarase creams in darker skin types. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Los Angeles
