Brown Hyperpigmentation after upper and lower eyelid lift and resurfacing. Once healed can The Hyperpigmentation come back?

Hyperpigmentation after upper and lower eyelid lift and what I thought was a light resurfacing in the operating room. I had this procedure done in Florida (I live in PA) on the recommendation of my sister. He is a board certified plastic surgeon from Melbourne Florida . 25 days later I hyperpigmentated. Went to see the doctor who put me on 6% Hydroquinone, Trenton 0.025%, vitamin c serum and moisturizer. It’s been 9 weeks and the browness seems to be gone. Once healed will the Browness come back?

What you are describing is called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This can occur after any trauma, including surgery, or resurfacing. Some skin types are much more susceptible to the problem. If treated correctly and early, as in your case, it usually resolves fairly quickly, although it may recur . Once well established , it can be very difficult to eradicate.

Fractional laser is an amazing and highly effective treatment in our office. We use the laser treatment to help with acne scars, large pores, fine wrinkles, tissue collagen loss, scars, sebaceous hyperplasia, active acne, and for brightening dark pigmentation. Although there are very strong fractional lasers such as CO2 laser, we use lighter treatments for corrective skincare and maintenance of results. Our Thulium fractional laser, clear and brilliant laser, and Ultra Thulium laser are excellent options in our clinic. We also perform CO2 fractional and erbium depending on skin tone and tolerance for downtime. Patients do have to use a Melarase cream before and after treatment to help further reduce pigmentation after laser.  Melarase AM, Melarase PM, and Melapads can seriously improve surface sun damage and UV related pigmentation. Dark spots can improve with these treatments. I recommend fractional laser for incisional scars as well, especially after plastic surgery.

Hi Kim,Sorry for your frustrations, but looks like your issue is resolved.  It is unclear what resurfacing procedure you had done, but it is certainly possible to have post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation after resurfacing procedures.  Your doctor treated you with the appropriate medications.You should call his/her office for specific recommendations to avoid return of pigmentation, but make sure you use SPF 30 or greater sunblock or moisturizer.Best wishes,Dr. Jay
