Can a Tummy Tuck cause bladder and urinary issues?

The tummy tuck is very superficial to your urinary tract and I doubt there is any direct injury. The increased abdominal pressure due to fascial (muscle) tightening would be the most significant right after the TT and that should be decreasing over time rather than increasing and causing pressure symptoms. It might be a coincidence in time line development of say like urinary incontinence symptoms. Therefore I would recommend you see a Urologist that specializes in female urology and be evaluated. 

I would doubt that the two are related. Abdominoplasty does not usually have any effects on bladder function. The muscle tightening in abdominoplasty is all done on the outer wall of the muscle, not internally. I would recommend that you see a urologist who specializes in female bladder issues.

Hello seestar.  I totally agree with all of the other physicians.  An injury to the bladder during tummy tuck surgery is unheard of these days.  Plus, if it was injured, you would have known very soon after surgery.  You may be very tight right now which may be putting some pressure on your bladder.  If that is the case, it will slowly resolve over time.

It would be highly unusual for a well executed abdominoplasty to affect your bladder and urinary tract. The only way that that would be affected would be if there was a gross surgical misadventure in which the intra-abdominal cavity was entered and the bladder was directly injured.

It would be extremely rare for that to cause a problem as you have described. Maybe I could see initially if the abdomen was too tight it could put pressure on the bladder, but you would be the first person ever that I have heard of a tummy tuck causing this problem. It is highly unlikely but anything is possible.

No component of a tummy tuck should affect your urination- especially 8 months post-op.  you can get increases intra-abdominal pressure from the muscle stitches, but your intra-abdominal organs grow accustomed to their newer, smaller cavity pretty quickly.  Agree that you should go see a specialist.

This would be highly unusual to have this problem after a tummy tuck especially when you are 8 months out.  Please go see a urologist who can investigate further into your problem.

It seems to me that any injury to the bladder would have manifested itself right away, not six months after tummy tuck.  It is hard to imagine a bladder injury since the TT is all done outside the abdominal cavity. A visit to a urologist might be in order if symptoms persist.  All the best. 

Anything done during the tummy tuck should not directly adversely affect your bladder but if the muscles were tightened the added intraabdominal pressure might affect a weak bladder or bladder suspension which your gynecologist or urologist might be able to answerDr Corbin
