Hello, thank you for your question. Your surgeon will likely want to work with a hematologist to make sure you're medically safe for the elective cosmetic surgery you are wanting. You can expect to be on blood-thinners after surgery.
Dear Passionate6081,you will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
Having an inferior vena cava filter is not a problem and may actually be an advantage for elective surgery. You didn’t share your full medical history but obviously you’ve had issues with blood clots significant enough to place the filter. As you know blood clots can lead to fatal outcomes. Surgical procedures including the BBL can lead to the formation of blood clots. Most likely your plastic surgeon would want clearance from a hematologist or your primary care doctor. Blood thinners maybe used during or after the surgery. blood thinners also increase the chance of bleeding during and after the procedure so this becomes a bit of a balancing act.Plastic surgeons don’t specialize in blood clotting disorders. We need the help of your hematologist to assess how much risk a surgical procedure may impart in regards to blood clots.I recommend having a few in person consultations with local board-certified plastic surgeons to see if you’re a good candidate for this procedure in regards to all the other variables that need to be taken into consideration. During that time please share your full medical history.A lot depends on your history of blood clot’s and those circumstances. your doctors may want to order some blood tests to see if you have any blood clot disorders for example.Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
