How do you treat bands in the front of a persons neck is a common question that patients ask facial plastic surgeons. The one difficulty in this situation, is the lack of photos. There are many causes of bands in the front of the neck. I'll do my best to highlight the most common causes and some treatment options. 1) Platysmal banding - The platysma muscle is a very thin muscle that lives right under the skin of the neck. It only covers the sides and there is a place in the middle of your neck (that runs vertically from your chin down to your adam's apple) where there is no muscle. So, think of it this way in the middle of your neck the edges of the muscle from each side dont attach and therefore you can sometimes see them. You probably notice this in some people, they have two vertical 'bands' of skin running down their neck. This is the edge of the platysma muscle. To treat this, we typically need to do a surgery to loosen them, stich them or cut the bands. Often, if this is the only procedure required but some people may need a formal 'neck lift.' In people like yourself who already had surgery, we can usually use the same incision. 2) Scar tissue - another possibility is actual scar tissue that formed. If this is the case, there are options including injecting steroids or revision the scar with surgery. The best way to determine this is to see a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon to assess the primary issue. Dr James P.
