I had a tummy tuck 9 months ago and still have abdominal swelling, could this be damage to my lymphatic system?

I cannot wear 'regular' clothing yet and still need to wear some type of compression. I'm concerned that I have some kind of damage to my lymphatic system at this point because it does not appear to be changing. Everything I have read indicates I should be passed this already. Should I consult some type of lymphatic specialist at this point? I did go to a lymph massage specialist from month 4 to month 6. Three months later and I'm still in the same position. Help!

Hello. Great question. However, a personal examination is needed to assess if your abdominal bulge is a result of swelling or fluid collection, or it may be neither. Follow up with your surgeon.

I encourage you to begin by visiting your surgeon for an evaluation and discussion of your concerns.  At nine months post op you are seeing final results and should not be experiencing regular swelling.  It may be that you are noticing visceral fat (internal fat that surrounds the organs) and mistaking it for swelling.  Your surgeon should be able to provide some direction.

Hello, thanks for your question and provided information. I always recommend my patients to wear their second stage garment for at least 6 to 8 months from the procedure, first 3 months for 24 hours and then for only 12 hours a day. If you are still swollen, you can apply compression under the garment, using an abdominal board and tightening your garment will help you, and if not, go to your B.C plastic surgeon office for a check up.
