Why is my rib cage/stomach area bloated and swollen protruding past my bra band!?

Question

I had my BA on Friday, 4 days ago. I have had a bowel movement and pee quite a bit, but my stomach area below my rib cage is swollen and bloated so huge it's uncomfortable to even lay down sit or walk. I tried taking Zyrtec to see if it was acid, but it hasn't done a thing. What is this?? And any thoughts on how I can get it to go away!??

Hi Goldie, Thanks for your question about bloating after your breast augmentation surgery. I completely agree with Dr. Lepore in that you are most likely experiencing post operative constipation (and added gas).  This can frequently happen after surgery due to the pain meds prescribed.  Many patients find relief by decreasing the pain medicines and increasing their intake of liquids and possibly adding laxatives. At just four days post op, you may have a combination of constipation/gas and swelling around the surgical site.  Decreasing the pain meds you are taking, taking a mild laxative, and walking should help.  If the bra band is too tight, ask your surgeon if you could loosen it a little.  With time this problem should subside, but check back with your doctor.  Best wishes, Dr Lepore.
