Answer: Does a fat embolism happen while having a BBL or after surgery? Thankfully having a fat embolism during a BBL surgery is rare. However, a fat embolism can occur during the time of surgery, or up to 24 hours after the surgery. It's a good question, and it's important to understand the complications of any surgery. However, it's also important to keep in mind how often these complications actually occur. Again, thankfully a fat embolism is a relatively rare occurrence.

Answer: Fat embolism's and complications Should have fat embolism happen it would be during the procedure. As you mentioned yourself fat embolism's while potentially very dangerous or exceedingly rare. Overall both liposuction and fat transfer are fairly safe procedures. And medicine there is an expression "never say never and never say always" It's possible for all kinds of strange and I usual complications and medical problems to happen after surgery. Complications should be put in perspective. While fatal outcomes are possible they are exceedingly rare. It's much more likely that someone will die in the motor vehicle accident then being struck by lightning. It's probably also true that it's more likely to die from a motor vehicle accident in having a Brazilian butt lift. When considering cosmetic surgery it's important to consider the doctors medical training and background. Board-certified plastic surgeon's having some of the most extensive training of any doctor. It requires a minimum of 10 years of medical training and many have 12 to 13 years of medical training. During these years of medical training plastic surgeons have worked in intensive care units, trauma surgery, vascular surgery and many other specialties. This diverse and extensive training leaves us trained and ready to recognize and take care of serious complications when they happen. Should a fat embolism happen from the fat transfer procedure done by a dr. not trained properly in plastic surgery the chance of recognizing and managing the complication properly is severely compromised. Consult with one or more board-certified plastic surgeon's who have expertise with this procedure in your area. They can go over risks and complications specifically what the chance of each complication is. In the last five years I have performed over 3000 liposuction and fat transfer procedures. Of these procedures I've had one serious complication. The patient had an infection requiring hospitalization for six days. In the end is the patient did fine and had a good outcome. Over all these are very safe procedures. Best, Mats Hagstrom M.D.
