Perineoplasty With Rectocele?

Question

I am a mom of 3 and I would like to have a perineoplasty done. I was diagnosed with a stage 1 rectocele after 3rd birth. The affects of the rectocele do not bother me much. It is more the gaping of my vagina and close proximity of vagina to anus that is bothersome. However, if I am going to get a perineoplasty done I would rather get everything done at once. Is it possible to get perineoplasty and rectocele repair together?

Yes, a perineoplasty and mild rectocele repair can be done simultaneously. If the rectocele were more severe, it could be considered to separate the procedures, as more symptomatic rectocele repairs tend to have a higher recurrence rate. However, these two surgeries generally complement each other well, allowing you to have a single recovery period while addressing both issues.

the only concern is, are you planning to have any more children because the future delivery will undo the repair you are planning to do.

I see your presentation on a regular basis: gaping vagina with vaginal looseness, but no symptoms of a rectocele. Perineoplasty with rectocele repair will only fix two problems. You have three - the third is vaginal laxity - looseness of the vaginal canal. If you don't fix the vaginal canal at the time of perineoplasty and rectocele repair, you will feel tight at the opening and very loose on the inside every time you have sex. The solution is called a vaginoplasty and it certainly should be done along with the rectocele repair and the perineoplasty. Then, you will not feel loose whenever you have sex.
