Is it possible to be Immune to Botox & Dysport?

Am I immune to Botox?Thanks for this question! Cases where immunity has developed to Botox and similar neuromodulators has been reported. There still on the market right now another option that you can discuss with your injector and that is Xeonim.You must also remember, that there are other options for improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles such as laser resurfacing, fillers, and other new technologies that can be an option for you in case none of the neuromodulators work in your case.

Thank you for your question. The short answer is yes - you can develop a resistance to Botox and Dysport, but it is extremely rare. It is possible that you’ve developed antibodies to the botulinum neurotoxin, but that too is rare. Botox is a tried-and-true treatment that has been used successfully for close to 20 years. If your injections didn’t provide the results you are accustomed to, it is more likely that it is because of undertreatment. I recommend that you see a board certified plastic surgeon, or ensure that your injector is trained and experienced in the nuances of Botox. Additionally, you may want to try Xeomin, because while it uses the same neurotoxin, the formulation is slightly different. Best of luck.

It would be rare to develop an immunity to Botox and Dysport.  It may be that additional units are needed to achieve the same results.  Another option you could consider is to try Xeomin.

It is very rare that you are immune to both Dysport and Botox. However antibodies can be develped to these neurotoxins. There are other factors that can play a role into the effectiveness of such neurotoxins, such as under treating, shelf life of the product, stress, working out,and/or higher metabolism. This is an interesting question - there have been reports of antibodies developing to certain brands of toxin, thought to be as a result of additional proteins being present which can stimulate the immune system. In nature they protect the toxin molecule from being broken down, but they are not useful in the treatment situation. Antibodies that prevent the toxin from working are quite rare though, and it is definitely worth considering the dose and placement of the injections in case this is the cause of your lack of response.Bocouture/Xeomin, a Merz product, contains no additional "complexing" proteins, and there have been no reports to date of anyone developing antibodies when they have only ever been exposed to this toxin brand. This is why it is my toxin of choice.If it turns out that you do have a true immunity to Botox then it would be worth waiting a few months, and then trying with Bocouture/Xeomin as there are plenty of examples of this being effective even after antibodies have been present.Best of luck.

While it is possible to develop an antibody to Botox or Dysport, this is a very rare occurrence.   Your doctor could try Xeomin which is neuromodulator offered by Merz Aesthetics. 

Thanks for your question. I had several patients like you in my prior practice. I figured that their bodies had started making antibodies against the molecules in Botox. Recently I learned that the active molecule is packaged with several carrier proteins. Your immune system can recognize these and fight against them. You might try Xeomin, which is another product like Botox, but without the carrier proteins. You may have some success with it.

While it is possible, and I have seen it, it is extremely rare to be immune to Botox and Dysport. In most cases that I have seen of nonresponse, the issue is the dose used.
