Hi I have a PFM crown on a back molar which is probably 12 years old and I am hesitant to replace it as I don't have a problem with it even with the chip. The dentist recommends I replace, the x-ray looked fine - it does not have a root canal done. I've posted some picture I took and wanted to get a idea if I can leave the existing PFM without any issue. I don't want to go through the experience of replacing it but if I do have to replace it what crown should be placed to avoid this problem. Thanks

An X-ray would really help figure out how badly decayed it is. However from the photo you posted it looks like that with me still be savable!
Your best bet is to get it checked as soon as possible before it deteriorates anymore
One of the check points to ascertain a good restoration is establishing a strong contact with surrounding teeth with exception when none is desired for functional and/or cosmetic reasons. Your case clearly indicates that such contact was not achieved. Glad to hear your dentist plans to address...
Placing a permanent crown on a painful tooth is not recommended. From what you described, you will probably need a root canal. Talk to your dentist about it. He should at least perform a pulpal test and refer you to an endodontist for consultation.
