I am trying to determine which is the best way to help reduce acne scarring. I am interested in doing microdermabrasion since it is more affordable but would rather invest in laser procedure if microdermabrasion is more of a temporary fix. Does microdermabrasion actually help in the long run or is it just a temporary fix? If so, which laser resurfacing procedure do you recommend?
Answer: Microdemabrasion is great at resurfacing the skin to reduce appearance of acne scarring. Acne scar treatments require precision and attention to detail. There are several types of acne scars, including atrophic, hypertrophic, PIH hyperpigmented, and hypopigmented scars. Depending on the types of scars you have, our office can recommend a Hidef treatment protocol that can recontour existing scars and reduce complexion irregularities. The results are simply life-changing. As a general rule, we recommend fillers, subcision, acne surgery, RF ablation, and laser ablation to help with atrophic scars. Hypertrophic and keloid acne scars require pulsed dye laser and IIT SC. PIH scars require chemical peels, Melarase creams (AM and PM) and laser. If you have ice-pick scars, we recommend RF ablation and TCA Cross. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Realself100 Surgeon

Answer: Resurfacing Thank you for your question.Microdermabrasion is treating the surface of the skin. It helps to get rid of dead skin cells and brighten your appearance. Unless the acne scars are very superficial, it is not going to do anything for them. You need deeper resurfacing for acne scarring, such microneedling or laser treatments that go down in to the dermis of the skin.

Answer: Acne Scar Treatment Microdermabrasion is good for exfoliating and brightening the skin, but there are better options available to treat scarring. You should consider microneedling with PRP or a fractional laser. Both treat the deeper layers of the skin to encourage healing and softening of uneven texture. You'll need 4-6 treatments, but you should expect to see a softening and blending of the scars.

Answer: Microdermabrasion and scarring Thanks for your question. You aren't going to get the results you are looking for with microdermabrasion, but it is a great treatment for cleaning out the pores and giving a bit of a glow for a few days. Microneedling and laser resurfacing are much better use of your money for improving acne scarring and stimulating collagen. Make sure your dermatologist has helped you clear up any active acne and their laser technician or aestheticians are the best in the area. If you have skin of a darker type, be very cautious with laser treatment to avoid post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Microneedling if often a safer avenue for darker skin types. Good luck and see an expert.
