Plastic surgeon or Breast/general surgeon for reductions?

I am unsure who to get to perform my reduction? A breast/general surgeon knows In depth about the breast but would they also cater for the cosmetic aspect as well asa plastic surgeon?

Hello!  Thank you for the question!  The breast reduction procedure is part of the core training in plastic surgery for surgical procedures. It is one of the most common procedures performed in plastic surgery. With this training, plastic surgeons are adept and proficient in breast reductions and the knowledge of vascularity to the breast during this procedure; with focus not only on the amelioration of your pains from the reduction, but also the aesthetic aspect of shaping and recreating pleasing-appearing breasts for you. When choosing a surgeon you must choose one you can trust. You could consult with one of each and see who you like the most. Whats most important is that you trust your surgeon and that your surgeon can show you examples of his/her work and long term outcomes. Choosing a surgeon is difficult but if you can get any personal recommendations or recommendations from your GP that would be a start. There are many experienced PS's in New Zealand to choose from.

I would suggest starting with the American Society of Plastic Surgery and/or the Aesthetic Society of Plastic Surgery to obtain a list of well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons.
Then, I would suggest you visit a few surgeons whose practices concentrate on aesthetic surgery. Ask to see lots of examples of their work and preferably speak/see patients who have had similar procedures done.
Be very careful with your decision-making. You will find, while doing your due diligence, that there are many different “specialties” who will offer their services to you; again, I strongly recommend you concentrate on surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Best wishes.
