Post laser lipo massages recommended?

My Dr said I wouldn't need any post laser lipo massges but its been 2 weeks since I had my stomch, love handles and back fat done and 10 days since I had my inner/outer thighs and knees done. I still have swelling and hard lumps on my stomach and thighs. Should I start massges? I read some people have good results. I'm also worried it will hurt since I still have some VERY tender areas and swelling.

Hi mjmom,

Your surgeon is correct that you dont need to get any post operative massages but it can help.  I will preface this by saying there is no study that has statistically shown that post operative lymphatic massages benefit.  Having said that I routinely recommend that patients invest in a series of post op lymphatic massages and add some external RF devices to tighten the skin post op.  My patients who have invested in this post operative care have done better than my patients who do not, in my opinion.

I would recommend trying atleast one lymphatic massage and take it from there.

Following laser liposuction, it is not required that you massage the treated areas. However, some patients do find that it helps. You could give a massage a try if you feel comfortable and see if there are improvements. Some surgeons offer post-op lymphatic massages; I would ask your surgeon if this is offered. Best of luck!

We offer lymphatic drainage massage after laser assisted lipo simply because those people typically get better and quicker results. We have to charge a little more for that simply because our therapists have to be paid. Depending on when you start, some of the areas remain tender to the touch for several weeks and are usually more pronounced initially. We actually offer the first massage immediately after the procedure and wait another two days for the second. That type massage is very gentle and most people can tolerate it. As the swelling diminishes with lymphatic massage, the residual pain lessens as well so that's another reason to use it. I would ask the doctor who did your procedure if he/she would refer you to a massage therapist well versed in lymphatic massage. Best of luck.
