I ha a chin implant 4days ago (through the mouth) and I still keep swelling as I THE chin and the area under and around it is going to explode. A bit warm to touch but no redness or bruising. Is this normal? I do feel weak and sick especially after taking the antibiotic and the painkillers. Is all this swelling normal?

Some swelling is normal and to be expected following an intra-oral chin augmentation. Typically, I keep the patient's chin area taped for 5-7 days to help decrease swelling and protect the area. Your swelling does appear more than average. I suggest you visit with your surgeon asap about your symptoms and have an examination. You may have an abnormal fluid collection or early infection of the surgical site. Your physician can best evaluate and treat you for this, or make additional recommendations. Best wishes.

Hi, it's always best that you contact your Chin Implant Surgeon with any questions and concerns about your recent chin augmentation with a chin implant.  Increasing swelling can possibly be cause for concern and would seem appropriate for you to follow up with your surgeon.  I have performed many chin implant surgeries, using silastic chin implants but I prefer using a small curved incision under the chin.  This technique can be done in 30 minutes or less often with local anesthetic alone and has very little swelling or bruising due to the limited dissection.  In contrast, the intra oral approach has far more tissue dissection which means more potential for post op swelling and bruising.Hope this helps.

Dear euterpy, I would suggest seeing your surgeon for a follow up appointment right away as your swelling is excessive and the warmth may be a sign of an infection. You should have some sort of dressing or compression band on as well. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
