Is it possible to widen your jaw with just a chin implant? (Photo)

Question

Unfortunately I have a small jawline with high angles, and want to know if it's possible to make the sides of my jawline appear wider with only a chin implant? I know that jaw implants would probably help the most, but I'm reluctant to get them due to the cost and complexity of the surgery. Thank you.

Without an exam your question cannot be answered.  You will need to see an Oral/Maxillofacial surgeon to see if othognathic surgery, genioplasty or using an implant is best for your specific case. It should be noted that patients with severely weak jaws or abnormally functioning jaws may be better treated with other facial surgery (orthognathic surgery), although a chin augmentation may be an option at a later time. These patients should seek the advice of a plastic surgeon to determine which course is right for them. Here is some information to help you make this decision: Candidates for Chin Augmentation - Patients whose chin profiles are weak but have normally functioning jaws are candidates for Chin Augmentation. Many of these candidates have used injectable fillers in the past to strengthen the protrusion of their chins, but are looking for a permanent solution. If you are one of these patients, then you are a likely candidate for chin augmentation

Forget about implants, very limited in their effects and highly problematic in the short and mid term.I have done many male patients seeking a masculine profile and finally being able to get rid of the billy goat beard.Your chin is optimal to augment, with bone supply (likely the hip), the vertical height, the horizontal width (this widens your jaw) and your anterior projection at a time.It is an awesome procedure, for a lifetime and with unparalleled results.

Hello,Thanks for your question. Chin implants are not appropriate for your issue. Jaw implants really are the best long-term option. Another option is a series of Radiesse or Sculptra injections into the area of the angle of the jaw to contour and widen that area. No standard form of a chin implant can make the jawline wider. In an effort to circumvent what you really need (true jaw angle implants), you can have a custom chin implant that will make some of the jawline wider as it extends back along the jawline.

Thanks for your question and picture.  Your chin seems to be a good size (though I usually judge these based on the lateral view photographs), and if your concern is with your angle of the mandible, then implants and fillers can be used to treat this.  Personally, I do not favor jaw implants here because of complications, and would discuss fillers based on your physical exam.  Good luck!

A full set of facial photographs without a beard are required to make a determination about being a candidate for a chin implant. Chin implants are manufactured in a large variety of sizes( small, medium, large, extra-large) and a variety of  shapes such as pre-jowl, and anatomical. The pre-jowl implants accomplish widening of the chin. In our practice, we use Implantech solid silicone chin implants that can be custom carved when necessary. Even an extended chin implant will not give you the widened jaw you desire. It is evident to me that you design your beard to create the appearance of a wider jaw. For the purposes of this answer, you might want to offer a picture with a bare face.An alternative may be a fat transfer from your own body to the jaw angle area. Hi, I have performed many facial shaping procedures using dermal fillers, facial implants (cheek, chin), liposuction and/or facelifts for over 30 years. Following my facial beauty principles, men look chiseled and handsome with angularity in the cheeks, chin and mandibular angles.  From the photos, your cheeks are flat anteriorly (in the front), the chin is weak as are the mandibular angles.  A silastic chin implant will add forward projection to the chin to "correct" and balance the weak chin but will not by itself augment the jaw line which I prefer doing with a dermal filler as described below.  The following procedures would create a more ruggedly handsome face.
Cheek augmentation with cheek implants to add angularity to the cheeks and mid face.  This would be combined with liposuction to reduce the excess facial fat to further define the cheek shape.
Chin augmentation, using a chin implant, to add projection to the chin creating harmony and balance to the lower face.  I have performed many Chin Augmentations using chin implants for over 30 years.  From the photos, your chin is weak.  A weak chin creates an imbalance making the nose appear larger, the mid face top heavy and the lower face look short that de-emphasizes the lips and allows early formation of a double chin.  Chin augmentation using a chin implant will add projection to the chin creating harmony and balance to the lower face.   I have found that placement of a silastic chin implant, through a small curved incision under the chin (also allows excess skin removal) to be very safe, quick, highly effective and far less invasive than a sliding genioplasty.  I perform chin implant surgery in 30 minutes or less, often using a local anesthetic alone.  In my opinion, you are a good candidate for chin implant surgery.
Augmentation of the mandibular angles using a dermal filler (jaw implants have too many unwanted side effects IMHO) to add volume, angularity and flare to the jaw line.
