Maximum jaw implant projection?

Question

How much projection can a jaw implant add on each side? I think a custom implant will be good in my case since i'll probably need more than 11mm (on each side) due to a a very narrow jaw. My chin and jaw has good development; except for the fact that it is narrower than my facial width. Is 15mm on each side (TOTAL 30mm) considerable with a custom implant? Also, will a larger implant cause more bone resorption compared to a smaller implant on the long run?

Without an exam your question cannot be answered.  You will need to see an Oral/Maxillofacial surgeon to see if othognathic surgery, genioplasty or using an implant is best for your specific case. It should be noted that patients with severely weak jaws or abnormally functioning jaws may be better treated with other facial surgery (orthognathic surgery), although a chin augmentation may be an option at a later time. These patients should seek the advice of a plastic surgeon to determine which course is right for them. Here is some information to help you make this decision: Candidates for Chin Augmentation - Patients whose chin profiles are weak but have normally functioning jaws are candidates for Chin Augmentation. Many of these candidates have used injectable fillers in the past to strengthen the protrusion of their chins, but are looking for a permanent solution. If you are one of these patients, then you are a likely candidate for chin augmentation

A custom jaw implant can be made to just about any dimension that the patient's soft tissue will permit. An 11 to 15mm width at the jaw angles is not uncommon. Jawline implants do not cause bone erosion in my experience but many will develop some  bone overgrowth along their sides back at the jaw angle area.

Good Question.  Any chin implant can cause bone resorption over time.  Also, the larger the implant the more chance for visibility and asymmetry.  I would recommend considering fat transfer for contouring.  This can be placed easily and symmetrically and last long term as you age.  In this way, you avoid a implant or foreign body and get a nice smooth contour with the projection that is needed.  I hope this helps.

There is no defined limit of augmentation in many cases. The soft tissue density has some effect; but we just did a couple where the amount was much greater than your goal. The key is balancing it with the midface/cheekbone area. Talk to someone with experience with implants. You need to be able to carve/customize at surgery to achieve the best results.
