Is it safe to have Botox injection (facial cosmetic) if you have ankylosing spondylitis and take TNF blocker and NSAIDs?

I have a condition called ankylosing spondylitis, and I take CIMZIA injection (TNF blocker) and NSAIDs every now and then when I have a flare up. I also sometimes get uveitis which I treat with steroid eye drops. Is it safe to have facial botox?

Thank you for the excellent question.  In patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis(AS) there is absolutely no reason why you couldn't get Botox or any other neuromodulator injection.  The same is true for TNF inhibitors such as Humira or CIMZIA.  The NSAIDs could/would likely causing some bruising though.

For patients who are concerned about having autoimmune conditions and taking medications I feel that Botox could be done but I strongly recommend Xeomin instead because it is more purified and lacks some of the proteins that Botox has.
Xeomin is FDA approved and works just like Botox.

there is no contraindication regarding your nmedical issues and Botox although since you are on NSAIDS you might expect more bruising.

Yes it would be perfectly safe to have botox with your condition.  You may notice some slight bruising due to the NSAIDS that you take.

Yes, you can have Botox!  You may be at a slightly higher risk for bruising because of the NSAID, but most people don't bruise with Botox.  Some of my happiest patients are those with several medical problems and I am glad I can make them feel a little better about their appearance.  Lana Long, MD
