Is it normal not to be red the day following microneedling with PRP?

It is normal for your skin to react differently after each treatment especially after using PRP. PRP has amazing growth factors which can speed up the healing process for microneedling. Normal healing time varies from 1-7 days depending on the person. Be sure to consult with a professional at a Board Certified Plastic Surgeons office.

Experiencing redness after treatment is normal and may differ from treatment to treatment. Also, PRP can also accelerate healing. As always, make sure you are treated by an appropriately certified practitioner. 

Typically, the skin could be red for 2-5 days depending on depth and power of the device. Most patients will be red for 2-3 days after. We have seen some patients “healing” time be easier after the second or third treatment but the downtime is around the same. You can ask the depth of the microneedling and if it’s at a safe level ask them to be more aggressive during the next treatment.  

In most cases, redness after microneedling subsides within 24-48 hours. However, that time can fluctuate, based on the depth of the procedure and the sensitivity of your skin. It is difficult to determine why there was a difference in your two procedures since only your providers know exactly how they were performed. I would advise you to allow some time for your skin to fully heal and the results to take effect. Always make sure you are working with an experienced, board-certified dermatologist to ensure all your treatments are both safe and as effective as possible. 

You will be more or less red with the depth of the needle and the amount of passes done over each area. With that being said, not being red... does not mean your treatment will not work, it just means one was more aggressive. You are still getting stimulation and going through a healing process with each microneedling treatment. Thanks for your question! Because everyone experiences different reactions and recovery times with microneedling/PRP, your lack of redness is not abnormal. In fact, the PRP may have helped your redness to heal faster. Whether or not you experience redness post-procedure has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the treatment or your results.

Hi,Great question While it is completely normal to be red after microneedling, some people don’t get red. It also depends on the depth of the treatments and how many overall passes you had. 

Hello and thank you for your question!The addition of PRP or PRF will speed up the recovery time as it contains fibrin, white blood cells, platelets, and stem cells- with PRF having the higher concentrations. Patients tend to recover faster after more routine treatments as the overall texture and thickness of their skin has improved with each treatment. Technique is also a big factor on post-procedure erythema. If a provider goes too deep, they may damage vascular components and cause for a longer recovery time and redness. If they are too shallow, you will appear less red and recover faster as well. You should wait for 4-6 weeks after the second treatment to assess your results and consult with your provider about them so they may better understand the topography of your skin for a third treatment. Best,Kian Karimi, MD, FACS
