I generally tell my patients that they can resume ibuprofen 3 days after the surgery. However, these medications should be stopped for at least 10 days before any liposuction procedure.
I encourage my patients to begin using ibuprofen if tolerated as soon as they feel the onset of discomfort after surgery.I typically recommend patients take 400 to 800 mg of ibuprofen every six hours. It is safe to take ibuprofen and narcotic pain medication at the same time.By using ibuprofen, patients are often able to use considerably less pain medication.Surgeons vary, and not all patients should be using ibuprofen. Please check with your surgeon to see what he or she recommends.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
Advil type meds are stopped before surgery for 10 days to minimize bruising and bleeding. After liposuction it is fine to use ibuprofen meds the day after surgery. I have followed this rule for years and it contributes much to pain care, decreases the amount of narcotic needed and I have never seen a bleeding episode with liposuction. Probably one could use ibuprofen the same day as the surgery but after the actual liposuction but we wait one full day to start ibuprofen. My Best, Dr C
