Will I need to buy a wedge pillow if I have a recliner that I can sleep in post-surgery?

I'm making my last-minute-purchases list before my surgery 1/15/16 and am unsure about buying a wedge pillow. I have a recliner in my bedroom, as well as my living room, that I can sleep in, but should I invest in a wedge if I want to switch it up and sleep in my bed relatively soon? Thanks in advance for all input.

Many patients find the recliner position comfortable in the first few days after breast augmentation, and it may be a good idea to be partially elevated in the recliner position to help decrease swelling. You can also achieve the slightly elevated position with extra pillows in your bed. I usually advise patients that a recliner or special pillows do not need to be purchased for the rest of imitation. They are handy, but not absolutely necessary.

Hello!A recliner is great to sleep in after surgery. It minimizes the amount of energy needed to get out of bed and keeps swelling down. You do not need a wedge pillow. You can move out of the recliner after a week and should be fine!

If your surgery is a tummy tuck a recliner is a great chair to recover in. In bed pillows behind your back work well. No harm in getting it but not absolutely necessary.Best wishes.

You should ask your plastic surgeon and discuss your options. I normally recommend a recliner chair but every surgeon has different post op instructions!

I find patients that have recliner chairs find them very comfortable for sleeping after surgery. A wedge pillow is probably not necessary, if you decide to sleep in bed extra pillows would most likely suffice to keep you elevated. Good luck!

I think that you will be comfortable in your recliner or in your bed with pillow elevation. I don't think a wedge pillow is necessary. Anything but stomach sleeping should be well tolerated early post-op. Good luck!

Hello,Thank you for your question. I typically recommend my patients to sleep with head/shoulders elevated for the first couple weeks after surgery. Back or side is usually most comfortable. I don't think there is any reason you would need to purchase a special pillow. Ask your Plastic Surgeon what they advise. All the best

Thank you for your question.  I do not think that a wedge pillow will be necessary during your recovery from breast augmentation surgery.  Typically patient's find their post-op surgical garment to be sufficient for their comfort.  In order to try and minimize chest swelling, some patients sleep with an extra pillow or two behind their back for added comfort.  Hope this helps

Thank you for your question.  In my practice I do not place any restrictions on patient position after surgery.  As long as the patient is comfortable it should be OK.  Some patients feel that it is not difficult and do not do anything different in the post operative period.  Check with your surgeon, but you may not need any special items..

Thanks for your question. I would tell you to save your money regarding any special pillows. This is more of an issue after tummy tuck. Breast augmentation is generally much easier to recover from. The recliner will be perfect, and maybe just have a couple of extra standard pillows around in your bed should you want them. Best wishes.
